Resource 5.5 – Excerpts From Sample Letters to Elected Officials

It is really important to “frame” your comments with respect to the Constitution (Federal or State) and other founding documents.  Don’t just give your “opinion.”

Dear  Governor Kasich:

We are very disappointed about your decision to accept Obamacare funding to expand Ohio’s Medicaid program. In addition to the huge debt that will undoubtedly result from accepting Obamacare federal funding, it definitely will cause a financial problem for Ohioans least able to comply.  Our medical insurance adviser has already advised us to expect a 50- 70% increase in our medical supplement costs… in mid 2013 and 2014 due to Obamacare…

…Please be reminded that you took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution.  That includes our state Constitution!  As registered voters, we voted for The Healthcare Freedom Amendment (State Issue 3 – Proposed Constitutional Amendment) which passed by nearly 2/3 of the vote in November 2011.  This amendment prohibited any law or rule, directly or indirectly, to compel any person, employer, or health care provider to participate in a health care system.   As we are a republic, with government by the people, certainly the vote of the people on State Issue 3 is to be recognized.  In light of this Constitutional Amendment, we are appalled that you would give any consideration to promoting Obamcare in our State.

(This is a follow up letter to a representative who gave a very vague and unconstitutional response to the original letter:)

Dear Rep. (name):

While I appreciate a reply from you, this one says absolutely NOTHING about your stance on this issue which is the reason I wrote you!

My vote is cast based on whether or not the individual running for office takes a Constitutional stand – not a conservative or liberal, not a Democrat or Republican – on the proposed legislation before you.  Your reply doesn’t even give me a hint as to your understanding of this and the fact that you took an oath to uphold the Constitution. Health care, by the way, is totally outside the Constitutionally limited, enumerated and delegated powers (See Article I, Section 8), for which you can support legislation and appropriate funds. Once again, you should know this, but your letter gives me NO indication of either your stand or understanding of this.

Kindly respond again with a real response advising me of the question at hand, most particularly your support or not of this bill, and the Constitutional reasoning behind it. People voted for you to support the Constitution, not special needs. I await your response.

Dear County Commissioners,

We have studied the issue of wind as a realistic energy alternative with an open mind… So far, however, the facts obtained from this research…do not support the idea that wind is a viable, efficient, and cost-effective energy alternative…

And there is this idea of forcing “Trespass Zones” on neighboring property owners, causing these neighbors, who are minding their own business, to lose the ability to enjoy portions of their own private property.  Our Founding Fathers wrote in the Declaration of Independence that we are all created by God who has given us certain rights that cannot be taken away; the rights to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.  This  includes the God-given right to private property ownership and the right to freely enjoy that private property without usurpation by anyone!  The Declaration goes on to say that the purpose of government is to protect these God-given rights… We, therefore, respectfully request that you do not grant a “Pilot” project to any wind developer now or in the future, as it is a clear violation of private property owners’ rights!
